Part 3 - Assembling the board

Let's begin with the case.

  1. Remove the components from the box if not already done.

  2. Use the supplied hex key to remove the plate screws.


  3. Remove the plate from the case.

  4. If no screw was inserted into the PCB-conducting screw position out of the box, install this screw.



  5. Flip the case over.
    Install the provided rubber feet into the insets.


  6. If installing the solenoid:

    1. Prepare the PCB. Flip it upside-down, and locate the dedicated solenoid pads.


    2. Solder the provided pin headers to the PCB.
      The headers should be positioned properly so that the pins sit low-profile and parallel against the PCB.


    3. Tin the leads of the solenoid. Solder them to the provided pin sockets.


  7. Install the stabilizers and spacebar pipe onto the plate. 

    Make sure the spacebar pipe matches the spacebar orientation you are using.
    Make sure the stabilizer inserts are oriented the correct way; the wire clip side should be facing away from the switch cutout.

    Note: The stabilizers and spacebar pipe will not be rendered in the images below due to not having a 3D model on hand.

  8. Tune and test the switches if not already done.
    Snap the switches into the plate.


  9. Insert the PCB against the switches.


  10. Solder the switches into place, making sure that the PCB is seated firmly against the switches.
    Excessive gaps between the plate and PCB may negatively affect acoustics.

  11. At this stage, it is highly recommended to connect the PCB to a computer to test the functionality of all keys.
    Repair any faulty joints and replace any dysfunctional switches.

  12. If installing the solenoid:

    1. Cut the provided 3M VHB adhesive sheet to cover this side of the solenoid.


      Note that the wire exits on the side facing the viewer, and the plunger extends to the left upon powering.

    2. Peel off one side of the VHB and secure it to the solenoid. Peel off the other side but do not adhere to anything.

    3. Insert the solenoid into the cutout on the inside of the case, so the plunger extends to the left when powered and the wire exits on top. Insert carefully so the side with VHB does not come into contact with the case. 

    4. Align the front of the solenoid to the cutout provided, and verify that the solenoid does indeed strike the target surface upon full extension.
    5. Push the solenoid's side with VHB against the case, securely adhering it to the case. 

  13. Place the provided O-rings atop the four plate mount points.


  14. If installing the solenoid: 
    Connect the solenoid to the PCB.
  15. Insert the switch-plate-PCB-stabilizer assembly into the case, taking care so that the O-rings do not move from their positions.


  16. Install the four plate screws, compressing the O-rings equally.


  17. Install the keycaps.
    Test some keystrokes and verify that they are sent.

Congratulations! You have fully assembled the Lunar II.
